"The construction of the figure of the enemy against which liberal societies must defend themselves, is also a way of more intensely regulating, controlling and policing the citizens of these societies. The way in which the ‘war on terror’ is used to mobilize people in support of their governments, and their supposedly liberal way of life against the terrorist enemy who threatens it, shows the utility that the discourse of war has in constructing social cohesion, disciplining people and deterring dissent. There is a general ‘securitization’ and even militarization of Western societies as a result of this discourse."
